It’s increasingly clear that consumers see no significant divide between digital and traditional media: what they want is more flexibility, freedom and convenience in when and how they consume any kind of content. Instead of a divided landscape, what we have is a fluid and multifaceted ecosystem – one where new digital offerings have created a bigger, more diverse content universe, and where digital has accelerated delivery across platforms.
Over the past decade, the rise of the digital age has changed the way that visual entertainment and films are delivered to households, with a variety of new media and formats changing the industry's operating landscape. Industry performance is linked to box office takings at cinemas, and film distribution to free-to-air TV, pay TV and other networks. Combined sales and rentals of DVDs and Blu-ray Discs have decreased over the past five years; while film piracy and web downloads have increased steadily, to the industry's detriment.
The Sports Services industry has become increasingly valuable to TV broadcasters over the past five years. Substantial new broadcast rights deals signed by major players have driven revenue growth at a forecast compound annual rate of 6.1% over the past five years. This includes consistent strong growth of 5.2% in 2014-15, to take industry revenue to $3.6 billion. The value of live sport to TV broadcasters was evident in the AFL's five-year $1.3 billion deal with Channel Seven and Foxtel announced in April 2011, which was followed up in August 2012 by a five-year $1.0 billion deal for Channel Nine and Foxtel to gain the rights to NRL coverage. Cricket Australia then agreed a five-year $690 million deal with Channel Nine and Channel Ten in July 2013.
Businesses across Australia, New Zealand and APAC are expanding their range of services to maintain growth.
The Professional Services industry provides a variety of services to a range of markets. A positive economic environment generally stimulates growth, with many client companies requiring services from the subdivision to develop and grow. Over the past five years, professional services operators have benefited from high construction and mining investment flowing into other sectors of the economy. Despite a slowing mining sector since 2014-15, the success of the mining division has resulted in growth for firms specialising in engineering. Furthermore, engineering and management consultants have benefited from businesses looking to improve efficiencies as new economic conditions constrain profit margins.
